Instructions to Authors

Český časopis historický/The Czech Historical Review is a double-blind peer reviewed academic journal. Submissions sent to the Editorial Office for publication must meet the professional and formal standards and requirements. Published papers also undergo editorial revision and formal and spelling unification.

The journal accepts manuscripts in Czech, Slovak and English at the Editorial Office e-mail address cch@hiu.cas.cz in the text editor MS Word. Texts in other languages are accepted by agreement with the Editorial Office. By submitting a manuscript for peer review, authors agree to the processing of personal data, which are used only for editorial purposes, and to the licence terms below.

It is the responsibility of the authors to provide a cover letter with their full name, academic titles, workplace/affiliation and full contact address, including the e-mail address. The following declaration should be attached to the text: “The present text has not yet been published. It is an original text and at present, it is not being offered to any other editorial office for publication.”

The Editorial Office requests confirmation that the submitted article has been proofread by a person with full professional proficiency in English (it relates to texts published in English).

The authors of any contribution are required to submit their ORCID along with the submitted text, with their affiliation attached.

The Editorial Office includes contributions in the following sections:

Studies – the original peer reviewed essays advancing new historical knowledge and presenting fundamental findings concerning Czech, European and world history. Contributions are focused theoretically, methodologically or historiographically such as research overviews.
Discussions – shorter essays of polemical character, without peer review
Book reviews and reports
Chronicle – reports from important international congresses and information from scientific life

We do not publish reports from regional or thematically narrowly focused conferences, reviews of polythematic proceedings or periodical publications. We do not accept papers of a marginal nature.

Manuscript length

Studies – the manuscript should not exceed 40 standard pages (72,000 characters including spaces), including footnotes, keywords, abstract, summary and attachments.
Discussion – should be no longer than 20 standard pages (36,000 characters with spaces)
Book reviews – the recommended length is 5-10 standard pages including notes (9,000-18,000 characters with spaces)

The Editorial Office encourages authors to prioritise a critical content and methodological analysis of the book under review; summary reports on the content of the book are not accepted. In the case of reviews of collective monographs, edited collections and proceedings, it is recommended that the focus be on the most significant contributions or the major themes linking the volume, rather than on a brief review of each contribution.

Literature reports – of 1-4 standard pages (max. 7,200 characters including spaces).

The Editorial Office encourages authors to highlight the main contribution and significance of the book in comparison with previous scholarship; descriptive summaries of the content of the book are not accepted.

Chronicle – 10 standard pages (18,000 characters with spaces) including notes.

Authors are required to respect the given length of the manuscripts.

For the peer reviewed section Studies, the following are required: abstract (ca. 800 characters wtih spaces), keywords and summary (ca. 2,500 characters with spaces). Abstract and summary can be submitted in Czech or English. Abstracts and summaries in English are accepted only after proofreading by native speaker.

A permanent DOI identifier is assigned to papers from the sections Studies, Discussion and Chronicle.

Submit your manuscript in the following modification: Courier New – size 12, line spacing 1.5; in the footnotes: Courier New – size 11, single spacing. Authors are required to respect the given number of characters for each paper.

Attachements of manuscripts

Image attachements are accepted in format of jpg. Graphs and tables should preferably be supplied as metadata. Please, do not include attachments in the text and send it as separate files. In the text, it is important to indicate where the concrete attachment should be located (e.g. Image 1 or Graph 1). At the same time, it is necessary to attach a caption and to indicate the source. Copyright and reproduction rights for the image attachments are procured by the author(s). Without proof of ownership of the reproduction rights or permission of the owner to publish in print or electronic version within the published text, attachments will not be printed.

Publishing of manuscripts

The journal does not charge authors any fees for the editorial processing and publication of articles. The author grants the Publisher a non-exclusive and all-inclusive licence free of charge for all known uses of the Work (particularly for reproduction, distribution and communication of the Work to the public) for the duration of the property rights of the Work. The author is permitted to immediately auto-archive the publishing postprint through repositories, personal pages, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, etc. The author is obliged to simultaneously refer to the published version of the Work, including the DOI. The author agrees that if the Work is published, it will be brought out on the pages of the Czech Historical Review and at the same time will be made available publicly, free of charge and electronically in the Digital Library system of the Czech Academy of Sciences or in the archive of digitized journals on the Publisher’s website. The author agrees to the inclusion of the Work in scholarly, bibliographic and citation databases, digital libraries and information systems for the provision of information services (e.g. CEEOL, Recensio), in which the journal will be kept in future. At the same time, however, this does not oblige the Publisher to use this permission to include the Work in databases and information systems.
