Abstrakt: In complex sentences with subordinate content clauses, the imperfective preterite is used in certain cases to express simultaneity with the past action expressed in the matrix clause, while the future tense is used to express simultaneity with the future action of the matrix clause. This is true even though Czech (and other Slavic languages) generally expresses simultaneity with the action of the matrix clause by means of the present imperfective. Until now these exceptional cases have been primarily viewed in the literature as manifestations of absolute tense in a content clause. In this article, I present arguments as to why I think these forms should in fact be understood as examples of relative tense.
