Abstrakt: The paper deals with the competition between the progressive and the older forms of verbs belonging to the conjugation pattern “tiskne” in the Czech l-participle (that occurs in the preterite and the conditional) and in the n-/t-participle (that occurs in the passive voice). A corpus analysis of journalistic texts from four Czech daily newspapers confirmed that the frequency of the progressive forms of the l-participle as “tisknul” (instead of the older “tiskl”) is slightly increasing, but also showed that the overall proportion of these progressive forms in the aggregate of all l-participles formed from verbs of pattern “tiskne” is still relatively low. However, the widespreading of the progressive forms as “tisknul” is a more serious phenomenon in terms of linguistic practice and codification than the widespreading of the progressive forms of the n-/t-participle (as “tisknut” instead of the older “tištěn”). The reason is that the competition of the forms as “tiskl” and “tisknul” affects more than a thousand verbs, about a third of which have so far only the older form (“tiskl”) codified, and these are partly quite frequent verbs. The progressive form of n-/t-participle (“tisknut”) affects slightly more than hundred verbs only. Moreover, the frequency of the passive voice (copula + n-/t-participle) is declining markedly in Czech.
