Abstrakt: This study deals with existential elements in The Witness, a novel by Václav Řezáč. Its aim is to find and analyse these elements, to reveal the connection between this work by Václav Řezáč and the existentialist thought system, and to place the novel in the context of existentialist literature. Václav Řezáč’s work has not yet been explicitly associated with the existentialist school of thought. He is usually characterized as a writer of psychological and socialist construction prose works. However, his novel The Witness can be understood in various ways, including through the prism of existentialism. This study thus presents an analysis of The Witness through various existential categories and a comparison with some literary works traditionally classified as existential prose.
