Abstrakt: The policy of Pope Gregory XV Ludovisi (1621–1623) was greatly influenced by the victory of the army of Emperor Ferdinand II and the Catholic League over the Bohemian Estates at the Battle of the White Mountain (1620). The event raised hopes in Rome that the previous expansion of Protestantism in the Holy Roman Empire was coming to an end and that a tide was turning in favour of Catholicism. One means of support was the formation of a small papal army under the command of Pietro Aldobrandini. It was raised in Moravia in the autumn of 1621. Due to circumstances, only the cavalry was involved in combat operations. As a result of the peace concluded between the Emperor and Gabriel Bethlen in December 1621, the continued presence of this army proved unnecessary and it was later disbanded.
