Abstrakt: The subject of the article is a multifaceted analysis of the so-called syntactic ellipsis on the background of similar means of non-explicit expression of meaning in language, both in terms of theoretical description and in terms of application of theoretical knowledge to specific linguistic material of selected Slavic languages. In the theoretical part, the author points out the polyfunctional and syncretic character of the syntactic ellipsis and tries to describe its linguistic status from functional-structural positions. On this basis, she formulates, as far as possible, the exact criteria for distinguishing ellipsis from phenomena with identical manifestations in surface structure or determines whether ellipsis is a normative means of expression in colloquial speech. Ellipsis is understood as a phenomenon that exclusively belongs to the domain of the parole and is consistently distinguished from the so-called null form of the syntactic feature, which has a firm anchorage in the linguistic system. The author then applies the theoretical knowledge to the specific linguistic material of contemporary Russian, Czech, and partly Slovak. Last but not least, the author tries to approach the pragmatic potential of individual structural-functional types of ellipsis and to clarify which factors influence the illocutionary force and perlocutionary effect of ellipsis and how the pragmatic characteristic of ellipsis is reflected in the emotional level of utterance.
