Abstrakt: This text discusses the extraordinary circumstances under which the following seven studies on the problem of state and nation in world history and in contemporary historiography were written. In 2016, Polish, Czech, and Hungarian national committees of historians began preparing one of the three major themes for the XXIII International Congress of Historians in Poznań. The covid-19 pandemic forced a double postponement, from 2020 to 2021 and then again to 2022, and the congress took place in a time of war and energy and financial crises. The congress was very well organized, but the aforementioned external circumstances had an adverse effect on the participation of invited speakers, a large number of whom cancelled, thus it was necessary to improvise and find alternative solutions. The original program, which was devoted to the concept of states and peoples and encompassed all continents, was reduced to only Central and East-Central Europe, the three macroregions of Asia, and part of North America. However, the body of studies published here presents a wealth of new insights together with unconventional approaches while also offering a basis for broader discussion.
