In preparation of manuscripts for the Czech Historical Review, please respect the following citation rules:

DOI

We request authors to respect the citation rules for digital identifiers. If you refer to a study or publication that has been assigned a digital identifier (DOI), always include this identifier in the brackets at the very end of the first reference to the study or publication. Please, follow this convention throughout the footnotes. E.g.:

Ivo CERMAN, Mýtus o neexistenci českého nevolnictví. Studie o historiografii, ČČH 121, 2023, no. 2, pp. 481–518 (https://doi.org/10.56514/cch.121.02.09).

When citing a website, the following format must be used (the date of page view is given in the brackets):

Peter JUKES, Tony Judt: The Last Interview, Prospect, 21 July 2010, http://www. prospect-magazine.co.uk/magazine/tony-judt-interview/ (20 March 2013).

When repeating the reference, simply state:

J. PEKAŘ, Bílá hora, p. 50.

When citing archival material, the general principle is that the name and location of the institution (archive) should be given first, followed by the name of the fond and a more detailed identification of the source.

Abbreviations and designation

The abbreviation for the page or pages is p., the volumes of journals and proceedings are indicated by Arabic numerals, the volumes of multi-volume treatments and editions by Roman numerals. If documents in editions are numbered, this number (abbreviated as no.) should be given alongside the pages. E.g.: CDB II, p. 328, no. 324.

When citing for the first time, give the full name of the journal, archive or fond and the official abbreviation in the brackets in case of repeated citation. E.g.: Josef ŽEMLIČKA, Kníže a král v souřadnicích přemyslovského věku, Český časopis histrorický (ČČH) 114, 2016, no. 1, pp. 7–31.

Use as little as possible abbreviations in the main text. The method of citation and abbreviation must be unified throughout the whole manuscript.

Please observe the distinction between the hyphen (e.g., Austro-Prussian War; Garmisch-Partenkirchen; Marie Curie-Skłodowska), located on the keyboard, and the en dash (e.g., pp. 1–2; 1848–1849; Prague – Bratislava 1992 /place and date of publication/), which is created using the keyboard shortcut Alt+0150.

Language and Style Guidelines

1. Language

The manuscript employs either British or American English consistently throughout the entire text (e.g., “colonisation” and “honour” are used consistently, not mixed with “colonization” and “honor”).
In the case of a thematic or special issue, the guest editor(s) bear the responsibility for ensuring that all articles maintain a consistent language style across all contributions within the volume.
Single-authored texts prefer the first-person singular or impersonal phrasing (e.g., “I argue” or “This article argues” instead of “We argue”).

2. Numbers, Dates, and Punctuation

Decimal numbers utilize a period, while commas separate thousands (e.g., 3.54% and 1,500 soldiers instead of 3,54% and 1.500 soldiers).
Centuries are spelled out fully in lowercase words (e.g., “in the nineteenth century” instead of “in the 19th century” or “in the XIX. century”; use: “nineteenth-century politics” or “seventeenth-century warfare”).
Dates follow a uniform sequence without internal punctuation (e.g., “15 March 1939” instead of “March 15, 1939” or “15. 3. 1939”).
Quotations use double inverted commas, with single quotes reserved for embedded text (e.g., “The ambassador noted that the treaty was ‘a complete failure’ in his report” instead of „The ambassador noted…“).

3. Terminology and Citations

Established English place names are preferred for major historical locations (e.g., “Prague” and “Vienna” instead of “Praha” and “Wien”).
Words in non-Latin scripts are transliterated and italicized (e.g., “perestroika” or “polis” instead of “перестройка” or “πόλις”).
Journal titles are cited in their original language, with an optional English translation in square brackets, establishing a consistent abbreviation upon first mention (e.g., “...in Český časopis historický [The Czech Historical Review] (hereafter ČČH)...” or “...in Kwartalnik Historyczny (hereafter KH)...”).
References are cited exclusively in footnotes (e.g., “...as demonstrated in recent research.¹” instead of “...as demonstrated in recent research (Smith 2020).”).
Subsequent footnote references to the same source utilize shortened titles rather than Latin abbreviations (e.g., “Smith, The Hussite Wars, 45.” instead of “Ibid., 45.” or “Smith, op. cit., 45.”).
Names of archival repositories are translated into English, followed by the native name in parentheses, while specific fonds remain in their original language (e.g., “Letter from King Charles IV to the town council, 12 September 1356, National Archives in Prague (Národní archiv), fond Archiv České koruny, inv. no. 120, box 14.” instead of “National Archives, Archive of the Czech Crown collection…”).
